Custom Wine Cellars

One-of-a-kind cellars built around your home, your collection and your taste.

Overview

Custom Wine Cellars

A custom wine cellar is a one-of-one room that exists nowhere else. No catalogue racking, no off-the-shelf cooling kit, no prefab panels — every dimension, every material, every detail is engineered for your home, your collection, and your taste. We build custom wine cellars in three broad styles: glass-walled contemporary showpieces that integrate into living spaces, traditional underground vaults with stone and brick, and architectural hybrids that combine both. Whether you want 500 bottles displayed under museum lighting or 5,000 bottles tucked into a hidden room behind a bookshelf, the custom build process is the same — relentless attention to fit, finish, and climate engineering, with no shortcuts and no subcontracted shortcuts in your house.

Why custom is worth the premium

Catalogue cellars work — for catalogue collectors. If your house is custom, your collection is mature, and you care about how the room presents to guests, a kit cellar will let you down. The wood will not match your existing millwork. The proportions will not align with your architecture. The cooling will be sized for someone else's room. Catalogue racking ages differently than custom-built racking because the joinery is faster and the wood is rarely acclimated. A custom wine cellar from us is built around your specific conditions: the racking is constructed to the millimetre against your wall framing; the wood is sourced and acclimated for two weeks before fabrication; the cooling system is engineered for your exact BTU load with backup capacity; and every piece of trim, hardware and lighting is selected to harmonise with the rest of your home. The result is a room that feels like it was always there.

How we build a custom wine cellar

Custom builds start where standard installations end. After the standard envelope is engineered (insulation, vapor barrier, cooling), we layer in the custom elements. Stone or brick veneers are sourced specifically for your project — usually from a quarry or supplier we have a relationship with. Wood is selected by board, not by lot, and acclimated in your home for at least seven days before milling. Custom millwork is built in our shop and dry-fitted before installation. Hidden doors, glass walls, custom hardware, integrated lighting and any architectural details (arches, niches, columns, ceiling treatments) are designed in 3D, prototyped where needed, and installed by our finish carpenters. Every custom wine cellar gets the same disciplined commissioning as our standard builds — seven days of climate logging, multi-point verification, and final tuning to ±1°F / ±5% RH. The difference is the level of finish, not the level of engineering.

Custom build pitfalls we avoid

  • Combining catalogue racking with custom millwork — the seams always show after a year
  • Using non-cellar-grade materials (standard plywood, untreated metal) that warp or corrode
  • Specifying decorative elements that compromise the climate envelope (open arches into living spaces)
  • Underspecifying cooling for glass-walled designs — glass walls need 30%+ extra BTU capacity
  • Skipping the acclimation period for custom wood — boards twist after install instead of before
FAQ

Custom Wine Cellars Questions

What does a custom wine cellar cost?+

Most of our custom wine cellar builds land between $45,000 and $250,000. The driver is rarely square footage — it is the level of detail in the millwork, the materials, and the architectural features. A 600-bottle custom build with bespoke redwood racking and a glass wall typically lands around $65,000 to $95,000. A 3,000-bottle estate vault with stone walls, hidden door, custom millwork and dual-zone cooling can run $180,000 to $300,000. Every quote is itemised down to the linear foot of trim, with no allowances or guesses.

Can you match the woodwork in the rest of my home?+

Yes — that is most of the point. We will sample your existing millwork, source matching species and stain, and fabricate trim and racking that flows visually with the rest of the house. We have matched everything from 19th-century Beaux Arts townhouse walnut to mid-century Brazilian rosewood. Send us a photo of the room next door and we will match it.

How long does a custom wine cellar take to build?+

Six to twelve weeks of construction is typical for a custom build, plus four to eight weeks of design and material sourcing up front. The longest single phase is usually wood acclimation and custom millwork fabrication. Larger estate vaults with stone and metalwork can run sixteen weeks total. We give you a written week-by-week schedule on day one and update it every Friday until handover.

What does custom wine cellars typically cost?+

Pricing varies with the size of the room, the materials you pick and the condition of the existing space. A straightforward project usually lands between $8,000 and $35,000; larger custom builds run higher. We give you an itemized quote — labor, materials, cooling, electrical, permits — before we ask for a deposit, so you can compare apples to apples.

How long does custom wine cellars take from start to finish?+

Two to four weeks of work on-site is normal for a residential project, plus design and permitting up front. Larger custom builds run six to ten weeks. We hand you a real schedule on day one — and we update it every Friday.

Are you licensed, insured, and warrantied?+

Yes — fully licensed and insured in all 50 states, with HVAC-certified technicians on every cooling install and a 10-year structural warranty on every wine cellar we hand over. Our cooling units carry the manufacturer warranty plus our own service-plan coverage.

Will I work with the same team from start to finish?+

Yes. One project manager and one in-house crew handles the entire job. We never subcontract framing, cooling, racking or finish work to a third party — that's the whole reason the company exists.
